Summary
This policy explains how Whatlas handles information. In short: your chats are analyzed on your iPhone and never leave it.
- Whatlas does not require an account and has no login.
- The app makes no network connections of its own. It works fully offline, apart from the App Store handling purchases.
- Chat exports you import are processed entirely on your device.
- The developer of Whatlas does not operate servers that receive your chats, and the app contains no analytics, advertising or tracking SDKs.
- Optional AI features use Apple's on-device model and run entirely on your iPhone. Nothing is sent to the developer, to Apple or to anyone else.
- You can delete any imported chat, or all data, at any time inside the app.
What the app processes
When you share a WhatsApp chat export to Whatlas or pick one in the Files app, the app reads the text file inside the export. It identifies messages, timestamps, sender names and message types (for example "image omitted") in order to calculate statistics. If the export includes photos, videos or other media files, they are ignored and never opened.
What is stored on your device
- Participant names as they appear in the export, and the chat name.
- Calculated statistics.
- Compact per-message records: timestamp, sender, message type, length, and counts such as emoji and links. These let statistics be recalculated (for example when you change the conversation gap setting).
- Frequency tables of words, short phrases, emoji, laughter and greetings, per participant and year, which power the word and emoji rankings.
- If you choose which participant is you, or rename a chat, that choice.
- Your preferences (appearance, time format and similar settings).
Full message text is discarded right after analysis. The temporary copy of the imported file is deleted when the import finishes. Stored data uses iOS data protection and is excluded from iCloud and computer backups.
On-device AI (Pro)
Whatlas Pro includes optional writing features, such as a letter about a chat, a portrait or horoscope of one person, a toast, a roast, advice, a movie trailer or a news report. They use Apple's on-device language model (Apple Intelligence, through Apple's Foundation Models framework), which runs entirely on your iPhone and works offline.
- They only run when you tap to write something. Nothing is written automatically.
- The model never receives your messages. It receives participant names and a short list of observations made from the chat's statistics (for example "Fridays are the liveliest day", "they write about one in three messages", someone's favourite emoji or how they laugh).
- The request and the result stay on your device. They are not sent to the developer or to Apple, and the app does not use Apple's cloud AI servers.
- The written text is saved on your iPhone only, in the app's protected storage, so you can read it again later. It is excluded from iCloud and computer backups, never leaves the device unless you share it yourself, and is deleted when you delete the chat or all data.
- These features need an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence turned on. AI-written text can contain mistakes; the statistics elsewhere in the app are the reliable source.
What is not collected
- Chat content is never uploaded or transmitted by the app.
- The app does not access WhatsApp, your contacts, photo library, location, microphone or other apps' data, and it doesn't send notifications.
- The app does not use advertising identifiers or track you across apps and websites.
Purchases
Whatlas offers an optional one-time "Pro" in-app purchase processed by Apple through the App Store. The developer does not receive your payment details. The app checks your purchase status with Apple's StoreKit framework on your device. Apple's handling of purchase information is described in Apple's privacy policy.
Sharing
The app only shares what you explicitly choose to share, using the iOS share sheet: images of statistics (such as Wrapped stories, fun facts, awards, and duo or group cards), a Wrapped video, a PDF report, or AI-written text as an image or as text. You can hide participant names on shared images, and quoted words from messages are hidden on them. Once you share something, how it is handled depends on the app or person you share it with.
Demo chat
The demo chat is made up by the app on your device. Its people and messages are fictional.
Ratings
The app may occasionally ask whether you'd like to rate it, using Apple's standard review prompt. Apple handles the prompt and any rating; the app receives nothing.
Other people's information
Chat exports contain messages written by other people. Use the app responsibly, respect the people in your conversations, and avoid sharing information they wouldn't want shared.
Deleting your data
Delete a chat from the Home screen or Settings → Manage chats, or delete everything with Settings → Delete all data. Deleting the app also removes all of its data.
Children
The app is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published with the app.
